One of the
students I coach, let's call her Rosa, has been hesitant but willing to try.
Since she said she wanted to go to a university
and mentioned a U.C. campus, I asked her if she was in any school activities.
She said no. The teacher suggested I urge
Rosa to join a women's group at Media. When I next talked with Rosa she said
she had joined a
leadership activity at her church and had been doing some public speaking. I
said that kind of after-school
activity was great and would help her college application. Then during my most
recent coaching session, Rosa was bursting with
good news, "I was chosen, one out of six students at Media, to go on a
college visiting day!! I'll get to see
the campus of Cal State at San Luis Obisbo! My first overnight and my first
visit to a college."
Rosa's excitement was so wonderful to see. As a professor I had seen
groups of students visiting the campus but this
was my first chance to observe first hand what that opportunity can mean to a
student. It made my week!
