I don't know how else to describe the scope of the writer coaching we did during the school year that has just concluded. A total of 568 coaches worked at a dozen school sites in four districts with 2,037 students in 14,834 individual writing conferences. Whew!
We added three new school sites this year -- Green Academy at Berkeley High School, Oakland School for the Arts, and Portola Middle School in El Cerrito. We expanded from only English Language Development classes at El Cerrito High School last year to include all of the school's 9th graders this year -- a total of 406 students at ECHS. And we began planning our first program in Richmond, at Richmond High School this coming fall.
An enormous amount of effort went into this work, from volunteer coordinators, coach trainers, site coordinators, Community Alliance for Learning staff and board members, and, most especially, from our skilled and dedicated community-volunteer writer coaches.
Well done!
